We are like quarterbacks on a football team…

My journey to becoming an orthodontist in the Navy was not a smooth and linear path but one with many detours and realignments in my career. In 2006, I was in my third year of dental school interning at a pediatric dentist office in Las Vegas where an orthodontist saw patients there 2 days a week. It was by chance one day the pediatric dentist asked for me to distract the orthodontist, Dr. T since they were preparing a birthday cake surprise for him. It was in that moment Dr. T told me he had been observing my interactions and said I had the personality of an orthodontist. I had no idea what he meant but I was intrigued to learn more.

Over the next few months I observed a side of dentistry I hadn’t seen before, relationship building and sustaining since you are with your patient for the long haul. On my last day with Dr. T, he took his certificate of orthodontics off the wall made a copy, then scratch out his name and put my name down. Six years later I graduate from orthodontics residency and ten years later I have the same certificate from the American Board of Orthodontics with my name on it.

As an orthodontist in the Navy, we are like quarterbacks on a football team, working with every dental speciality to ensure our patients, the men and women who serve our country and their children get the best care we can provide. As officers we have the rank and leadership to ensure we understand and fully utilize our military’s chain of command so that we can assist all ranks, all branches of services in our capacity.

Our mission first, team focused environment with a strong camaraderie is what I bring with me no matter where in the world the military plants me.
